The Dapple Designs Expert Says:

A member of the Acanthaceae family, Acanthus mollis is an old-fashioned plant that forms a wide clump of large, glossy leaves, from which spires of white and purple flowers, rise to a height of around 1 metre. It is in bloom from late spring to early summer. The leaves sometimes disappear for a time after flowering but soon return and they are particularly luxuriant in winter. It's best grown in a partly shady position with reasonable moisture, and protection from snails. It makes a very interesting foliage colour contrast, with the grey green leaves of Arthropodium cirratum.
