The Dapple Designs Expert Says:

Hippeastrums are a bulb that originates from Central and South America. They are best grown in areas that do not experience much frost otherwise you will have to grow these plants in a greenhouse or conservatory. During winter Hippeastrums are dormant and prefer to by dry but by the time they start appearing in spring, they will require sufficient moisture to allow the leaves and large flowers stems to develop to their full potential.
